Out in August
Sony have revealed that the 80Gb PlayStation 3 will launch in Europe soon. Speaking at E3, Sony US big cheese Jack Tretton announced that the top-end PS3 will fall to the same price as the outgoing 40Gb model in September.
Now, European boss David Reeves, has said the 80Gb SKU will land on August 27th across the continent, costing 299 GBP or 399 Euro.
"We will be doing promotional bundles from the middle of September to the end of December at various prices," Reeves offered.
"The 80GB replaces the 40GB. Please do not ask me if we're going to go down in price for the 40GB because I will give you the answer, the answer is no.
"This has been planned by Kaz who is here today and the team for many, many months. We have very, very few 40GBs, especially in the UK market, and we'll be out of stock probably by the time we launch on August 27th the 80GB."
To be fair you can buy a cheap 250gb hard drive to pop into a 40gb PS3 if you want... the only real advantage of the 80gb stateside was the PS2 back compatibility (which is now omitted for the euro port... of course!!).
