The latest sales data from US chart monitors NPD Group, reveal that the Wii is leading the North American hardware charge, taking 714,200 sales over April.
Debuts for Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii during the month are credited with giving the Wii the edge, and Ninty reckon this is just a sign of more to come, as the Wii reaches out to "an expanded audience".
The Xbox 360 was second but some way behind with a reported 188,000 units sold, the PlayStation 3 just a whisker off on 187,071. May's NPD data should be more interesting, once we witness the impact GTA IV's launch had on console sales.
The Xbox 360 is still the USA's leading console overall, NPD tell us, Microsoft's beast standing on 10.1 million, the Wii just off on 9.5 million. This despite Microsoft modifying their original 'number one la la la' statement, by adding 'among HD consoles' to their jubilation.
Still, we imagine it won't be too long until the Wii is the bona fide number one US system, barring Nintendo never shipping another system to stores... oh, hang on...
I think that we'll see a boost in sales for the PS3 and the 360 for May. Dunno what to expect for the Wii. I'm seeing a few more PS3/360 owners on the IGN Wii board asking about the Wii now. Should be interesting. The Wii's perceived game drought coming up for the 2nd half of 2008 could be blown out of the water by one huge 1st party game announcement.
Right now, not being a GTA fan, I'm looking forward to MGS4, Too Human, Resistance 2 and Gears 2. But I've been playing the Wii about 99% (not exaggerating) of the time this year. A stark contrast to the last few months of 2007 when it was COD4 on the 360 all day, all night.
Great time to be a multi-console owner.
