Sony last week revealed plans to deliver support for the popular DivX "online" video format to the PlayStation 3 console, with a report today adding that the media format could be heading to the Xbox 360 in the not too distant future, too.

Xbox 360's embracing of the format was mooted on Xuecast.com, who quote DivX CEO Kevin Hell as having confirmed that his organisation are in talks with Microsoft about the prospect. DivX MPEG-4 support is on the table then for the Xbox 360, but the site also reports that it is not a top priority for Microsoft.

WMV, HD WMV, H.264 and MPEG-4 support is already included in the Xbox 360.

"DivX is currently working to certify PS3 and deliver a superior digital media technology to consumers in the near future. Current PS3 end users will be able to add DivX functionality to their systems via a separate system software update at a forthcoming date," Kevin Hell enthused when PS3 support went public.

More soon.
